Our Story
How They Met
Professor Seiji Kumagai of Kyoto University's "Institute for the Future of Human Society" and CEO Toshikazu Furuya, an expert in data analytics and AI development. Two individuals who shared a common vision of fusing "traditional wisdom" with "cutting-edge technology" came together.
Toshikazu Furuya, CEO
Founded Exa Intelligence Inc. (now ExaWizards) in 2016 and achieved a public listing valued at approximately ¥80 billion in 2021. Conducted research on generative AI (GANs) at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Informatics, and in 2018 presented on virtual worlds using generative AI to Masayoshi Son at SoftBank Academia.
Professor Seiji Kumagai
Doctor of Literature, completing his doctoral program at Kyoto University's Graduate School. An expert in Buddhist studies (India, Tibet, Bhutan) and chief priest of Kyojun-ji temple (Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha). Believing that ancient wisdom can still benefit people and society today, he promotes various interdisciplinary and applied research.
BuddhaBot Research Announcement
Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, they conceived a system where people could consult AI about their troubles, incorporating Buddhist teachings. The BuddhaBot research announcement attracted significant attention.

Seiji Kumagai
CIO / Chief Impact Officer
Born in Hiroshima in 1980. Completed doctoral program at Kyoto University Graduate School, Doctor of Literature. Since 2023, Professor at Kyoto University's Institute for the Future of Human Society. Concurrently serves as Head of the Uehiro Ethics Foundation Endowed Research Division since 2017 and as Numata Professor at the University of Vienna since 2018. Specializes in Buddhist studies (India, Tibet, Bhutan) and Bon religion. Author of numerous works. As co-founder, leads the academic side of 'Traditional Knowledge Technology'.
Toshikazu Furuya
CEO / Chief Executive Officer
Born in Kure, Hiroshima in 1986. MBA from Kyoto University Graduate School of Management. Completed doctoral coursework at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Informatics. Founded Exa Intelligence (now ExaWizards) in 2016, achieving a listing in 2021. Since 2018, has been conducting research on generative AI (GAN) at Kyoto University and studying the construction of metaverse spaces. Founded Terraverse in 2022. Has extensive experience in data analysis and AI development along with a strong entrepreneurial track record.
